Before & After: A Bamboo Oasis Garden Wedding in Westchester

March 4th, 2015

In the 25 years that X-Quisite Flowers & Events has been making our Westchester clients’ event design visions a reality, we have never been given such a short timeline to produce an event as intricate and creative as with this Bamboo Oasis Garden Wedding held at Brae Burn Country Club in 2012.

And we loved every minute of it!

The Father of the Bride came to designer Richard J. Amante with less than 3 months left until the day of the wedding, a specific vision for his only child’s perfect day, and trusted that Richie would be able to deliver – decades before, Richie’s father had planned the Father of the Bride’s own Bar Mitzvah.

With such a short timeline, the family made the X-Quisite showroom a second home for the next few months and their passion for the project was always welcome. Richie took half-formed ideas taken from fond memories – the simultaneously intimate and infinite feel of seeing the pacific ocean from an overlook in California, a secret garden blooming within bamboo walls, a chuppah suspended over water – and got to work translating them into the perfect wedding overflowing with flowers and rich with textures.

Building A Garden

The logistics of this event called for an entire week of building different platforms and walls to protect the venue and create a smooth transition for the second time constraint – only an hour to transform the room from the ceremony to the reception.

Walls of bamboo, stained to bring out the more verdant hues and tied with green raphia, were carefully constructed to protect the framework of the club.

The XQ team had to construct and install fake molding and trim to the doors and frames that matched the original décor, as well as a base around the room that could be drilled into to hold the bamboo rods in place. The façade-frame for the top of the door was carefully constructed to match the existing doorframe, giving us space to rig the bamboo without damaging the original door.

Plastic was put up between the walls and the bamboo wall, protecting the walls, floors and paint.

After the bamboo layer was completed and the green turf was laid down, the second layer was constructed and implemented. Green lattice fences surrounded the entire room to give the feel of a private garden while hiding the bamboo wall that would be revealed when we removed the garden wall for the reception.

Constructing Layers

The stage, which would be used for the band during the ceremony, also had to be constructed in the week leading up to the wedding day.

The bandstand stage was increased by 12 feet on either side and entire frames were built behind it to hold the starry night façade.

This was entirely hidden during the ceremony, only to be revealed after the cocktail hour.

Setting the Chuppah Afloat

The focus of the ceremony was the chuppah, which was designed to look like it was floating on an infinite pool of water that extended out into the golf course beyond the glass walls.

The process started with the XQ team building the Bimah (platform) – a process that took a full week – that would be surrounded by a moat with floating flowers and hold the chuppah created from blooming white cherry blossoms.

The bottom of the moat, surrounding the Bimah, was filled with crystals and elegantly lit to give the feeling of movement and harness the natural feel created by the garden.

Completing the Garden Oasis

Directly opposite the chuppah, at the top of the aisle, a waterfall of honeysuckle and passion vine tumbled down the lattice fence creating a gorgeous focal point as the bride made her processional entrance.

The bride wore her mother’s wedding dress and offset the opulent surroundings with a simple bouquet of Lily of the Valley.

The groom was adorned with a similar simple boutonniere.

The setting sun brought gorgeous natural light into the room as the bride entered, truly making the venue feel like a garden with dappled sunshine.

While guests enjoyed the cocktail hour in the bar and lobby they were able to admire the escort card table, featuring an orchid tree designed and created to bring the organic garden feel out into the entrance of the wedding. It was constructed from green goddess Calla Lilies, oversized Succulents and twists of Weeping Willow.

Meanwhile, the XQ Team was working on transforming the ballroom into a bamboo garden with a starry night backdrop for the band…

The Flip

With only one hour to transform the décor from ceremony to reception, the XQ Team got to work. The moat around the Bimah had to be emptied while the chuppah was taken apart and the platform was dismantled. The bamboo wall, which had been carefully disguised behind the green lattice fence during the ceremony, was revealed for the reception while the green turf was pulled up.

Our amazing team, made up of a 20-person crew, managed to complete the transformation in only 51 minutes!

The Reception

When guests returned to the ballroom, they were greeted with a complete transformation!

The bamboo wall, entwined with greenery and lit from below, was the backdrop for three different styles of centerpieces featuring locally grow Calla Lilies, Cattleya Orchids, Phaleonopsis Orchids, James Storie Orchids, and Dendrobium Orchids.

It was a pleasure having our clients so involved in the process, and we were truly inspired by their passion for the event and their love for each other! Every challenge inspired more creativity in the entire X-Quisite Flowers & Events Team, and as sad as we were to tear apart the ceremony décor, we were proud to create such a large transformation in such a short time.

Our deepest thanks go to Brae Burn Country Club for trusting us to create an event that involved so many additions to their existing structure and putting up with our team for an entire week before the event. We are also so grateful to photographer Harold Hechler for capturing every detail, before and after, so lovingly!
